One of the thrift shop finds I was most excited about, so I’m extra happy that it’s 100% complete! Not dated, sadly. Maybe 80’s or early 90’s?

I love it when these thrift shop puzzles are complete, especially when they’re older ones. Makes me happy they were well cared for before they ended up with me, and now I can do the same.

And here’s a little update on the 2000 piece I’ve been working at when I have the chance. Last week was SGDQ- a week long video games speed running marathon for charity, so I didn’t get much work into it during that time as I was watching! Really trying to push it now, but life is getting in the way. Ah well, puzzles are always there waitin’ on ya!

‘Woodland Near Annapolis, MD’ 304 piece Whitman Guild

I know this is quite old, but sadly it’s not dated. My best guess is maybe 1960’s? I found some online supposedly from the 1950’s with a price marked on the front of 39ยข, and this one is priced at 49ยข! Nice to find such an old one complete in a really solid box!

Very much enjoying these vintage puzzles. Little slices of history.

Some Remarks About Re-marks

2019-05-21 16.42.09
‘Austria’ a 1000 piece by Re-marks

FINALLY FINISHED. This was a thrift shop find, and probably one that I was most excited about. I’ve seen this lovely puzzle at Barnes and Noble a few times, and while I really like the image, it was hard to pull the trigger at fifteen bucks. I was over the moon when I pulled it off a thrift shop shelf, and even better, for around a dollar!

2019-05-05 13.37.47

I was stoked to start it, and it had clearly been assembled once before. All the pieces were sorted into baggies. Like, really sorted. Buildings in one, roofs in another, mountain, water, foliage, edges…. The person who’d assembled it before was clearly a hard core puzzler! I dumped it all back in together, because that’s how I roll,ย  and got to work!

2019-05-05 13.37.24

Right away I noticed it was dusty. Like, really dusty. Unusually so. Small tiny dust particles, as well as big fluffy bits. You can also see the edges of the pieces are ‘puffy’ and almost ragged, from what I can only assume was a dull cutting blade. Oooookay…. not the best first impression.

I got all the edge pieces out onto my board, but by then I’d had enough of this dust! I’d been blowing it out of the box, rubbing it off pieces, swiping it off my board; this stuff was everywhere!ย I finally said to heck with this- I’m solving this dust issue now. I took all the pieces, tossed them into a large plastic bowl with a lid and shook the dickens out of them for five minutes. Re-marks does use a nice, thick cardboard, so I was certain they’d stand up no problem to the abuse, and surely this would knock loose all the rest of this dust and I’ve have a cleaner set of pieces to work with. I dumped them into a strainer over the sink, one with big open holes to let all the dust fall through, and shook it there for another five minutes. “There-” I thought “Dust problem done!”

2019-05-09 20.38.02

If only! After leaving a fairly large pile of dust in my sink, considering this was just a jigsaw puzzle we’re talking about, it was STILL unimaginably dusty! I’m not one to usually complain about dust, even when there’s a lot of it. It’s a cut paper product, so of course there’s going to be dust! But this was intense. Gratuitous. The most dust I’ve ever seen in a puzzle EVER. And keep in mind, this puzzle has been assembled once before! You’d think most of the dust would already have been knocked out, usually the experience I have with thrift store puzzles!

2019-05-21 13.10.44

Despite the dust I persevered. The puzzle was still relatively fun, despite the weird puffy edges giving the pieces a really weird fit. They didn’t really want to nest in with each other because of it, making it difficult to tell if they were in the right spots at times. The buildings and roofs interspersed with foliage was a highlight here, an interesting challenge! Then I got to this point, nothing but blue mountain left, and it was like hitting a brick wall. This dust filled, ill fitting nightmare wasn’t fun anymore. Now it was just an annoying mess.

2019-05-21 16.43.00

The finished result was still nice. The printing is crisp, and from what I’ve seen of their images, they pick really fantastic ones! But after this experience, I’d never buy one of these again, at the very least not for the new price. I’d have complained to Re-marks if it were a new purchase (something I don’t feel comfortable doing on a secondhand purchase), and this puzzle has definitely soured me to the company. I mean,ย this much dust is a quality control issue to me- something that should have been weeded out before being shipped off, it was that bad. I think I spent more time blowing, knocking, rubbing and sweeping dust off of and out of the pieces and off of my board than actually assembling them!

2019-05-21 17.02.03

And afterย all that,ย this was all the dust left on my board after I took it apart. Seriously??

One last note… I wonder if this fellow knows he was immortalized in a puzzle in just his swim trunks? LOL!

Family Trees and Thrift Store Sprees!

2019-05-09 14.28.39

After working on this beauty for nearly a month, I couldn’t be happier with the result! This puzzle is simply stunning, and Cobble Hill is definitely a new favorite puzzle brand! The finish is wonderful, I couldn’t stop running my hand over it to admire the ppieces. Everything fit together perfectly, the printing was great…. Ahhh, I just couldn’t be happier with it. Really looking forward to the two dragon puzzles I have by Cobble Hill awaiting me on my shelf!

“Colorful Sea Treasures” 500 piece Puzzlebug

Another quick dollar store puzzle completion, and another to be glued and hung over the fish tanks! This one’s so bright and pretty, I love it!

So I’ve been having a blast thrifting for puzzles both last weekend, and this morning, and have had absolutely splendid luck! My first run netted me 14 single puzzles, with two multi-packs of 4 and 8 puzzles respectively! Just look at that little Cobble Hill!

I’ve since started the “Austria” puzzle by Re-marks that’s pictured in the photos and I’m… less than impressed. It’s getting close to completion, so I’ll fill you all in on why when I finish it up!

I was so excited with my finds from last weekend, that I took advantage of today’s wonderfully cold weather (It was around 35 degrees this morning, in MAY, whaaaat?) to go again, hitting a different assortment of shops. I love living in city, that’s sort of consumed several other nearby towns and areas, because there are loads of thrift shops all over!

I couldn’t believe my luck today though, a ton of the beautiful vintage landscape photo puzzles I’ve discovered I like so well, that gorgeous vintage food puzzle, and THREE Springboks! Omg!

Hopefully all these wondrous beauties will keep me occupied through much of the hot summer months, when it will be so miserable outside I won’t want to go anywhere for thrifting fun…

Puzzling Updates!

2019-04-14 22.15.55

I’ve been hard at work on this beautiful Cobble Hill puzzle- it’s my first time working this brand, and I’m very, very pleased with the quality! Nice board, lovely clear and crisp printing, and the cut is perfect and clean. Very little dust too!

It’s a toughie though! All the ‘easy’ parts (which was really only the owls) are done, and now all that’s left is the slow work of assembling all the foliage. It’s been fun, but slow and challenging. I’ve worked on it a lot in the mornings, with a cup of iced coffee, and my two cats meandering around me and the table.

“Brightly Colored Tropical Fish” 500 Piece Puzzlebug

Of course, that’s not all I’ve been doing! We had to cancel our cable plan this last week, so I’d spent some time puzzling a few PuzzleBugs in the livingroom, and watching through the last of my DVR’ed shows before they disappeared. Such fun! The fish will be glued and hung above my aquariums.

ย “Tobacco Barn, San Luis Obispo, CA” 500 piece MB Croxley, 1997

I also finished up my current ‘desk puzzle’, a very nice vintage Croxley. I like the image, and had a lot of fun assembling it, but this was the first one I was actually disappointed in the quality. The pieces fit VERY loosely, and the whole thing had an unpleasant shimmy and shake because of it. Almost as if the cutting blade was much wide than it should have been maybe? It’s the only one of the four Croxley’s I’ve done so far that has had be craftsmanship though, so hopefully it will only be an occasional one-off problem! It was bought second had too, so who knows how many times it’s been assembled in the last 20+ years! That could have something to do with it.

2019-04-25 19.45.04

Hopefully this week I’ll make some more progress on this bad boy though! I can’t wait to see it done! I think I may frame this one!

“Thatched Eaves Roof”ย  a 500 piece by MB Puzzle Croxley

2019-04-04 13.31.05

Finished one of my thrift store finds today, a little 500 piece I’ve been doing on the end of my desk. It’s been the perfect break fromย  computing; just spin around in my chair, flip on the lamp, and a-puzzling I will go!

I wish I’d taken progress shots, as this one was essentially completed in bands going down. The strip of sky, strip of roof, strip of white walls, strip of grass…. Right down to the flowers! So happy this one was also 100% complete and in very good condition! It’ll be a fun one to do again at some point.

Near Berchtesgaden…

‘Near Berchtesgaden, West Germany” 500 piece MB Croxley, 1991

Another older MB Croxley puzzle, this time from 1991. Absolutely lovely, and a 100% complete thrift store find!

Simply loving these oldies. Really nice quality, with wonderfully thick pieces. I did repair a few where some of the image was pulling off with the dab of a glue stick. Glad I can give them a loving home!

Catching Up!

Hello hello! It’s been a bit since I posted- getting over the flu and trying to catch up on the housework is rough! Everything was, and still is partially at least, a wreck! D: I’ve alos been to the doctor today for an ear infection I picked up while I was sick, so that’s fun. But I’m still puzzling!

2019-03-07 18.03.362019-03-07 18.04.14

I finished this beautiful 500 piece MB Puzzle Croxley image, no name that I can find. 100% complete, which is always lovely from a thriftstore find!

After that I decided to start this Ravensburger…. Mostly because it’s a Ravensburger and is super nice quality. I’ve wanted to get it done so I can trade it away for something I like more!

2019-03-08 09.56.10

I just was NOT digging the image though, not at all. Someone had mentioned that they did the same image as a 500 piece, and did not enjoy it all, so that put me even more off it! I decided to pack it back and put it straight into my trade/sell bin! Too many puzzles to do to waste time on ones I won’t enjoy, even if they are fantastic quality!

I decided instead to break out this panoramic 750 piece by MB Puzzle, “Big World”. I’d been looking forward to doing it quite a bit, he image son the box is phenomenal. While I was doing it however, and getting a more close up view of the art, I discovered its the sort of digital art I’m not as fond of, where everything is vaguely plasticky looking. I still love the image, but decided to pack it up and be done with it when it was complete! It also went into to my trade box!

And last but not least, I stopped into a Goodwill in a town nearby, and boy am I glad I did! Came away with all of these vintage lovelies for around ten bucks!

2019-03-12 17.41.382019-03-12 19.15.05

Color me excited! All of them are in excellent condition, and appear to be complete! They’re gonna be a blast to put together, and my are also my mum’s favorite variety of puzzle because they’re the sort she grew up on, so I’ll be loaning them off to her to puzzle out as well! Win-Win! ๐Ÿ˜€

Thanks for puzzling with me today!
